Who Needs Black Friday When You Have Small Business Saturday?

This Saturday, November 28th, 2020, is Small Business Saturday, and City Vino hopes that you can join us for a very special tasting, with Jon Yeager of International Cellars. For those who have participated in our Zoom tastings over these last few months, you have already enjoyed Jon’s terrific personality and sense of humor, and now you can meet him in person. He’ll be in-store from 11 am to 5 pm, along with a few pop-up sales you don’t want to miss.

Jon will be pouring four wines from the International Cellars portfolio including a bubbly, a white, a red blend, and a varietal red.  He will entertain you with stories about the wines, wineries, and winemaking.

For the bubbly, Jon will be opening the illi Prosecco Extra Dry Treviso DOC, which hails from Veneto, Italy. illi is made from 85% Glara and 15 % Chardonnay. To make Prosecco, the Charmat method, or sometimes called the tank method, is used. There are two fermentations. The first is done in a stainless-steel tank at a cool temperature. This preserves primary fruit flavors and may take 15-20 days. The second fermentation is done in a pressurized tank to capture the CO2. This may last a month. The wine is generally left on the lees (dead yeast on the bottom of the take which will impart a toasty flavor) for some time before filtering. Food pairing ideas include Cured Meat, Aperitif, Appetizers and snacks, Vegetarian Dishes, Shellfish, Spicy Asian Dishes

The white wine, Jon will be featuring is the 2018 La Legende De Saint-Martin from Sancerre, France.  The Sancerre region of the Loire Valley is known for producing some of the most compelling wines made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  This wine is beautifully pale in color with fresh and fruity aromas of white peach, lemon, and flint along with flavors of melon and mineral notes.  If you are a fan of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, be sure to come try this one and see how it differs from your favorites.  This wine would pair beautifully with goat cheese, shellfish, chicken, or vegetarian dishes.

Jon will be sharing the 2017 Andrew Rich Wines “Little Table” GSM Blend which comes from  the Columbia Valley region of Washington State.  The wine is a ‘GSM Blend’ which means that the wine contains a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and this particular one is comprised of 78% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 7% Grenache.  This is winemaker Andrew Rich’s take on a southern Rhone style wine.   There are aromas of plums, black cherries, and blackberries along with fresh overturned earth.  On the palate, there is black pepper a common characteristic of Syrah based wines along with those dark fruit, earth, toast, and vanilla.  For pairings try spiced crusted port tenderloin with caramelized masala cabbage, chicken thighs with creamy garlic, Dejon and cider vinegar sauce, and spaghetti with miso and eggplant

The final wine in the tasting in Jon’s lineup will be the 2018 Stealth Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley in California.  While labelled Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Syrah.  The wine is an affordable Napa-style Cabernet that is rich and luxurious with layers of flavors of ripe, dark fruit along with toast, light nuttiness, and vanilla.  This is definitely a wine to enjoy with steak, meaty stews, or portobello mushrooms.

Join us this Small Business Saturday to try these wines and hear Jon’s take on them.  While you visit, be sure to toast him with that bubbly and wish Jon a Happy Belated Birthday as his birthday was on Monday 11/23.
