The winery’s location will determine under what wine laws it may choose to participate. Wine laws are meant to strengthen the branding relationship between winery and consumer, by informing the customer what level of quality, approved varietal used, and production methods were imposed to produce a bottle of wine. Austrian vineyards are all located on the east coast of Austria, surrounding the capital city of Vienna, and near the borders with the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovenia. The grape growing is away from the Alps and is centered around the flatter part of the country, so that the grapes have enough warmth to ripen.
