Sparkling wines are truly the hallmark of any celebration. This week, there are dueling celebrations on hand, as we not only celebrate Mother’s Day, but we also celebrate City Vino’s 5th Anniversary! Break out the sparkling wine this week to toast to mom or to her memory. We will also be popping a cork to commemorate our 5th anniversary. Malbec World Day is celebrated annually on April 17th. With Passover and Easter and other events going on, this variety’s special day was set aside, temporarily, at the shop. In the world of “better late than never,” we will be celebrating Malbec Word Day this coming Friday and Saturday, in-store, and will be featuring three Malbecs for your tasting enjoyment. To round out the tasting with a white wine, we will have Argentinian Malbec’s dear friend, Torrontés.
The 1974 tune by Mac Davis, called “Stop and Smell the Roses,” has been hijacked by City Vino for our themed rosé tasting this weekend, which shall now be known as Stop and Smell the Rosés. Of course, our City Vino staff were not even a twinkle in our parent’s eyes in 1974 , so this song was played for us as an “oldie” in the 1990s, during our formative years . That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it.
Last week’s blog, I (Kathy Wiedemann) Was a Judge for the Virginia Governor’s Cup 2022 - Part I, covered up to my pickup of the precious cargo which was the first 60-plus wines to be judged on day one of the final judging for the “best wines in Virginia.” I purposely put that in quote marks because not all wineries submit their wines to the cup competition. Their reasons for not submitting wines vary. Some wineries are not into competitions and medals. Others don’t have the required quantity of cases to hold back and make available after the competition is completed. I am sure there are many other reasons.
If you don’t throw an idea, thought, desire, dream, or goal out to the universe, it may never happen. That’s what I did early last year, in late January or early February 2021. A Facebook friend and former wine instructor of mine at Capital Wine School had posted a few photos of little vials of wine that she was tasting at home, as part of the judging for the Virginia Governor’s Cup competition. She holds the highest level in the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET), and is a WSET instructor, and a high-level manager of a large wine distributor, and I replied to that post with an emphatic “A goal of mine is to be a judge in the competition.”
