Join Us Thursday May 28th For Our Summer Wine Virtual Picnic

This Thursday, May 28, 2020, at 7:00 pm, City Vino goes virtual with a Summer Wine Virtual Picnic, via Zoom. The event will be led by Jeremy Sutton, who manages national accounts for Kysela Pere et Fils. Jeremy will walk everyone through three wines that are great for your summer enjoyment and pairing.

You can taste along with City Vino and Jeremy, by purchasing the Summer Wine Virtual Picnic wine pack which contains all 3 wines for $45.99. Registration for the Zoom meeting is free and can be added to your cart here: Register for Summer Wine Virtual Picnic. An email will be sent to you with a link to the Zoom meeting. City Vino is also offering a bundle of cheese and crackers, for $11.99, to pair with your wine to add to the evening’s festivities, and the details are here: Summer Picnic Cheese and Cracker Bundle.

If you haven’t used Zoom before, you may want to test out the emailed link earlier than 7:00 pm on Thursday. Zoom works on PCs, laptops, iPads and cell phones. Here is a helpful video guide to help you navigate Zoom:  “Join a Meeting.”  If you prefer written instructions to video, Zoom also has this handy page: Zoom Quick Start Guide for New Users. On Zoom, you’ll be able to watch and listen along, and ask questions, using either you’re your computer or phone’s microphone, or typing them into the chat box.

The wines for the tasting include a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc; an Austrian white blend; and a Spanish Tempranillo blend, from the Kysela Pere et Fils portfolio of wines. During the tasting, Jeremy will guide you through the wines, but here is some basic information about them:

The first wine is Rubus Sauvignon Blanc Canterbury New Zealand 2019 which is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has aromas of gooseberries, lemongrass, boxwood, and fresh celery, along with bready notes. The wine is dry and crisp, with flavors of those gooseberries, along with citrus. This wine would pair beautifully with vegetables or light seafood dishes.

The next wine is the Hugl Weine Gemischter Satz Niederösterreich Austria 2019. This wine is a blend of 50 percent Grüner Veltliner, 40 percent Gelber Muskateller, and 10 percent Riesling. The term “Gemischter Satz” means that the wine is a field blend, where the grapes were harvested all at the same time and fermented all together. The wine has aromas and flavors of herbs and spice, including a bit of white pepper, which is characteristic of Grüner Veltliner. This wine pairs well with roasted chicken or German/Austrian schnitzel.

The final wine for our picnic is the Burgo Viejo Reserva Rioja DOCa Spain 2014, which is comprised of 85 percent Tempranillo, 10 percent Graciano, and 5 percent Mazelo (synonym for Carignan). The wine has flavors and aromas of black pepper, ripe black fruit, and vanilla. Pairings for this wine would include red meats, game and charcuterie.

Should you purchase all 3 wines and do not finish them on Thursday, fear not. You can put the cork or other stopper in them and store them in your refrigerator. They can certainly be enjoyed over the span of a couple more days. And, yes, refrigerate the red. Just bring the red out an hour before you want to drink it to let it warm up closer to room temperature. If three wines are too much for you to open in one evening or you aren’t a white or a red wine drinker, feel free to pick up one or two of the wines individually and join in. We’ll see you there!
