While shopping the shelves of a wine shop like City Vino, you notice an intriguing bottle of sparkling wine with a crown (beer-type) cap on top. You pick up the bottle and hold it up to the light .and there is a coating of tannish residue at the bottom of the bottle. You slant the bottle a bit sideways to get a better look and the residue starts floating around in the bubbly, making the wine cloudy.
On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, the Virginia Wineries Association, Virginia Wine Marketing Board, and the Virginia Vineyard’s Association revealed the results of the 2021 Virginia’s Governor’s Cup competition.
Lovers of Virginia wine are most likely already familiar with the grape Viognier. Some of Virginia’s initial recognition in the winemaking world happened, based on wine made from this grape. In fact, in 2011, the Virginia wine marketing board named Viognier the “signature” grape, to help its wines gain recognition outside of the state.
The year 2020 has been challenging over these past months for everyone, including wineries all across the state of Virginia, as they have had to shutter their doors and rely on online and phone orders for curbside pickup, delivery or shipping.
With the “Stay in Place” order across the state of Virginia in effect until June 10—unless we hear otherwise—restaurants, wine stores, and wineries have had to adapt their business models to still serve their customers as best they can, given the constraints of the official order. Businesses have ramped up their carry out, added or adapted curbside pick-up, and upped their shipping game, in order to keep their beloved business open so they can serve their loyal customers, both old and new.
